That is why we call these guys the Cardiac Cats, Danny. I watch every UK game and let me tell you (and I speak for most UK fans) that none of us expected this run especially after the beat down lowly South Carolina gave us a couple of months ago. However, this team peaked at the right time and to think we are making this run without Willie Cauley Stein (probable 1st round draft pick) is pretty amazing. One more W and the 9th championship is secured. I respect what Uconn has done also but I think they are meeting the team of destiny tonight.

PS- I was lucky enough to be at the Elite 8 game vs Michigan and see Aaron Harrison aka "ONIONS" knock down that 3 sending Big Blue Nation into craziness.

Prediction (Biased of course) for tonight: James Young goes bananas. Cats win by 8. I start looting in my neighborhood esp with it being a pro Louisville Cardinal area. Go Cats!

Yep, increased strength/muscle mass can be very beneficial for improved performance. It's one thing that I'm harping on all the time!

Danny, I agree with your general point about needing to play your sport to get better at your sport but I think there is a lot to be said for multimodality training.

Just running the stadium stairs or doing long slow cardio won't translate very well into improved performance on the court. However doing highly varied, intense, coordination requiring workouts (CrossFit for example) often does. The structure of these workouts often allows faster and better gains in conditioning that you would get from just playing the sport. that can translate to still going strong in the fourth quarter as your opponent fades.

And for most of us a little more muslce mass from weight training translates into better performance.

Good stuff Danny. I have never really explained the distinction between HIIT and "M/HIIT" to clients. You are right though and I am guilty of lumping all short-time (10-20 sec) interval training into the HIIT category. Reagrdless of the rest interval. I think I have an acronym that will better resonate with clients... Sorta High Intensity Interval Training or SHIIT. We all feel like that right after those workouts anyways, right? Good luck with the poopy diapers (another form of SHIIT).

Ken,

Thanks for the kind words.

Unfortunately I don't have an exact answer for you. Like always, "it depends." But in general...

I'd say that for your goals try to perform 1-2 cardio sessions per week. And then lift 3-4 times per week if schedule allows. There are an infinite amount of options available. But at 64 I definitely would try to focus on low impact cardio options. At my gym my clients do a lot of slide board, battling ropes, work the heavy bag, dumbbell/barbell cardio options, etc. I know most gyms don't have this equipment available, but with a little thought you can get a good low impact cardio workout in with many different tools.

Hope that helps.

Danny,

I'm 64 and a former journalist who has a lot more time to train in retirement. At 5-6, 140, I'm not trying to lose weight, just tone up and strengthen what I have. I love lifting, but not so much with cardio and circuit training (I prefer super sets and quick-paced workouts). How much cardio (and circuit training) does a 64-year-old guy who's not in terrible shape and not overweight need to do? No one ever addresses that element (at least not that I've seen), and while I understand focusing on the younger lifters, I would like to know how to proceed and improve my overall health. Thanks for any insight you can share. I enjoy your website.
